Anthropic Brings Claude Fable 5 Back After a Three-Week Suspension

Anthropic put its Claude Fable 5 model back in service on July 1, 2026, after a suspension of nearly three weeks imposed by American export controls. The return applies to all users, with new guardrails and a catch-up period on usage limits.

What happened

Fable 5 and its larger sibling Mythos 5 launched on June 9, 2026. Three days later, on June 12, the American government applied export controls after Amazon discovered a method for getting around Fable 5’s safety protections.

The technique let the model spot software vulnerabilities it should not normally have helped find. Anthropic suspended both models on the spot while it worked out how far the problem went.

A return in three stages

The rest played out over two weeks, at a brisk pace:

• June 9: Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launch.
• June 12: export controls applied, both models suspended immediately.
• June 26: the government authorizes Mythos 5 to return to service.
• June 30: export controls lifted entirely.
• July 1: Fable 5 comes back for all users.

According to the Centre for AI Standards and Innovation, the bypass technique did not open up cyber capabilities specific to the Mythos tier, and the model’s guardrails remain solid.

What changed on the way back

Anthropic did not simply switch the model back on. The company added a new classifier that blocks more than 99 per cent of the problem cases identified so far, and says it has doubled the number of researchers assigned to this type of risk compared with the original launch.

To make up for the outage, Fable 5 usage does not count against usage limits, up to 50 per cent of the weekly quota, through July 7. Anthropic is also setting up a joint framework with its Glasswing partners, a consortium of twelve organisations, to assess how serious this kind of bypass is, continuous monitoring of reports, and a dedicated program on the HackerOne platform.
