You get a photo from a colleague or a client, double-click it on your computer, and Windows tells you it can’t open the file. The culprit usually has a strange extension: .HEIC. That’s the format iPhones have used by default for several years now, and it regularly causes trouble when a photo travels to a PC or an older piece of software.

The good news: converting these photos to good old JPG is fast, free, and can be done right inside Windows 11, no sketchy tool from some random corner of the web required. Here’s the simple method, whether you have a single image or a hundred to process at once for your small business.

1. Why your iPhone photos are in HEIC

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) isn’t just an Apple quirk. It’s a modern format that keeps roughly the same image quality as JPG while taking up about half the storage space. On a phone loaded with thousands of photos, that adds up to real savings.

The problem is compatibility. Plenty of software, websites, printers, and older systems simply can’t read HEIC. The result: a photo that won’t open, an attachment a client can’t view, or an online form that rejects your file. JPG, on the other hand, has been understood everywhere for decades.

2. Install the HEIF Image Extensions (free)

Before converting anything, Windows 11 first needs to be able to display the format. Microsoft provides a small free extension for this. Without it, the Photos app sometimes opens HEIC files and sometimes doesn’t, depending on your system version.

Here’s how to add it:

• Open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
• Search for HEIF Image Extensions.
• Click Get, then let the installation finish.
• Restart the Photos app if it was already open.

3. Convert a HEIC photo to JPG

This is where the magic happens, and it doesn’t require any extra software. The Photos app, already built into Windows 11, handles the job on its own.

The few-click method

• Right-click your .HEIC file, then choose Open with and select Photos.
• Once the photo is displayed, click the three dots (the menu) in the top right corner.
• Choose Save as.
• In the file type dropdown, select JPG (or JPEG).
• Name your file and click Save.

Your photo now exists in two versions: the original in HEIC and the new one in JPG, ready to be sent anywhere. The original image isn’t deleted, so there’s no risk of losing your memory. The quality stays excellent for everyday use, whether that’s a client email or a social post.

4. Convert several HEIC photos at once

Handling one photo at a time is fine for a quick fix. But once you’ve pulled a whole album from a company event, you need a batch approach.

Two options work well on Windows 11:

• Multi-select in Photos: select several images, then use the export or resize function to save them all as JPG in one go.
• The Paint app: open each HEIC file, then Save As in JPEG. A bit manual, but requires no installation.

• Go to Camera, then Formats.
• Choose Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.

From that point on, your new photos are born as JPG. Keep in mind, though: you lose HEIC’s space advantage, and your older photos stay in HEIC. For a small business that exchanges a lot of visuals with clients or suppliers, this setting can save a lot of back and forth.
