An "insufficient disk space" warning or a C drive that turns red slows the whole machine down and blocks updates. The good news: Windows 11 already includes everything you need to free up disk space safely, with no third-party software and no risk to your files.

Quick answer: To free up disk space on Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Storage, turn on Storage Sense so temporary files are deleted automatically, then empty the Temporary files section and the Recycle Bin. After that, uninstall the apps you no longer use.

Freeing up disk space on Windows 11 when the C drive is full

1. Find out what is taking up your drive

Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows shows how the space is divided by category: apps, temporary files, documents and so on. That is the starting point for freeing up disk space intelligently.

2. Turn on Storage Sense

On the same page, turn on Storage Sense. It deletes temporary files and empties the Recycle Bin on its own, at the frequency you choose. It is the simplest way to keep space available over time.

3. Delete the temporary files

Still under Storage, click Temporary files. Check the items you want to clear (temporary internet files, thumbnails, old Windows update files), then click Remove files. Windows recreates these items whenever it needs them, so deleting them is safe.

4. Use Disk Cleanup

The classic tool still does the job: type Disk Cleanup in Windows search, select the C drive, then pick the categories to clean. The Clean up system files button lets you go further.

5. Uninstall the apps you no longer use

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Sort by size and uninstall the software you have stopped using. That is often where several gigabytes are hiding.

Bonus tip: OneDrive Files On-Demand

With OneDrive, turn on Files On-Demand: your documents stay in the cloud and only take room on the drive when you open them. Ideal for a laptop with a small drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is it risky to delete the temporary files?

No. Temporary files and the contents of the Recycle Bin can be deleted safely. Windows recreates them automatically when it needs them.

My drive fills up again after a cleanup, why?

A drive that fills up quickly can point to a drive that is simply too small, to large local backups or to a software problem. A diagnosis by a technician will pin down the cause.
