A power outage, a crash, or a “Don’t Save” clicked too fast: losing hours of work in Word or Excel is frustrating. The good news is that Office often keeps a backup copy. Here’s how to recover an unsaved document in just a few clicks.

1. Check autorecovery first

If Office closed unexpectedly, the Document Recovery pane opens automatically the next time you launch the application. It lists files recovered since your last save. Open the most recent version and save it right away.

2. Recovering an unsaved Word document

If the pane doesn’t appear, you can recover an unsaved document manually:

1. Open Word.
2. Click File > Info.
3. Select Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents.
4. Choose the file you want (the date and time help identify the right one), then Save As.

3. Recovering an unsaved Excel workbook

The process is the same in Excel: File > Info > Manage Workbook > Recover Unsaved Workbooks. Excel shows the temporary copies it kept automatically.

4. Restoring a previous version (OneDrive or SharePoint)

If your file is saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, you have access to version history. Open the file, then go to File > Info > Version History to roll back to an earlier state.
