How to Speed Up a Slow PC: 10 Fixes That Actually Work
A computer that crawls, takes two minutes to boot or freezes on every click is one of the most common frustrations in an office. Before you shop for a new machine, know that you can usually speed up a slow PC in a few simple steps. Here are 10 fixes, ordered from the easiest to the most technical, and none of them put your files at risk.
Quick answer: To speed up a slow PC, start by restarting the computer, turning off the programs that launch at startup (Task Manager > Startup), freeing up disk space and installing your Windows updates. If it is still sluggish after that, adding an SSD and more memory (RAM) gives you the biggest gain.

1. Restart the computer
It sounds obvious, but a PC left in sleep mode for days piles up processes in memory. A real restart (Start > Power > Restart) clears memory and settles a good share of temporary slowdowns.
2. Turn off startup programs
Plenty of software launches automatically with Windows and drags out the boot. To speed up a slow PC, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Startup tab and disable anything you do not need right at launch: media players, updater utilities, chat apps.
3. Free up disk space
A nearly full drive slows down the whole system. Go to Settings > System > Storage, turn on Storage Sense and delete temporary files. Uninstall the applications you no longer use while you are there.
4. Install your Windows updates
Updates fix bugs and improve both performance and security. Check Settings > Windows Update and make sure everything is current, drivers included.
5. Scan for malware
A PC that suddenly turns slow may be infected. Run a full scan with Windows Security (the built-in antivirus) or with your own security product. Malicious software tends to eat resources quietly in the background.
6. Cut back the visual effects
Animations look nice but cost resources. Type "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" in the search box, then choose Adjust for best performance, or simply switch off the animations.
7. Clean up the browser
A browser loaded with tabs and extensions gets hungry fast. Close the tabs you are not using, remove extensions you do not need and clear the cache. This is often the real cause behind a "slow PC" that is really just a slow browser.
8. Check what is running in the background
In Task Manager, on the Processes tab, sort by CPU or memory use. You will see which application is eating the most, and you can close it or uninstall it.
9. Add an SSD, the biggest single gain
If your computer still runs on an old mechanical hard drive, swapping it for an SSD transforms the machine: it boots in seconds and applications open instantly. On a PC that is a few years old, this is the most cost-effective way to speed up a slow PC.
10. Add memory (RAM)
If you keep a lot of tabs and applications open at once, more RAM cuts the stalling. It makes the clearest difference on computers with only 4 or 8 GB.
When should you ask for help?
If the computer is still slow after all of this, you may be looking at a failing drive, an overheating problem or a system that needs to be reinstalled. A technician can run a quick diagnostic and save you from buying hardware you do not need.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my PC suddenly get slow?
A sudden slowdown usually comes from an update running in the background, a full drive, malware or an application crashing over and over. Task Manager will point you at the culprit.
Does cleaning up the PC erase my files?
No. Deleting temporary files, disabling startup programs and clearing the cache leaves your documents, photos and email untouched.
