To filter blue light on Windows 11, open Settings, then System, Display and Night light. Turn it on, set the strength to taste and put it on a schedule. Your screen shifts to warmer colours in the evening, which rests your eyes and makes it easier to wind down before bed.

You finish a long day at the office, then open the laptop again in the evening to wrap up a file. Your eyes pull, the screen feels harsh and sleep is hard to catch. The blue light screens give off is often the culprit, and Windows 11 handles a good part of the problem without a single piece of extra software. The feature is called Night light, and at OKTO Solutions we set it up regularly on workstations at small businesses in Trois-Rivières and the Mauricie, because once it is scheduled it asks nothing more of you. Here is how to turn it on and tune it in a few minutes.

Quick answer: To turn on Night light in Windows 11, open Settings, then System, Display and Night light. Switch the option on, adjust the strength to taste and set an automatic schedule (from sunset to sunrise, for example). Your colours turn warmer in the evening, which rests your eyes.

1. What Night light actually does

Screens give off a large share of blue light, the same wavelength as daylight. In the morning that helps you stay alert. In the evening it sends the wrong signal to your brain and delays melatonin, the hormone that gets you ready for sleep. The result: you go to bed tired and you do not sleep.

Night light in Windows 11 blocks nothing magical. It simply shifts the colour balance of your display toward warmer tones (more yellow, less blue) on a schedule you choose. Same principle as the night mode on your phone.

  • Less eye strain after long hours in front of the screen.
  • A gentler transition toward sleep at the end of the evening.
  • More comfort in a dimly lit room.
  • No software to install, no impact on performance.

2. Turning Night light on in a few clicks

The steps are short and happen entirely inside Windows 11 Settings. Give it less than two minutes.

  1. Click the Start menu, then Settings (the gear icon).
  2. Go to System, then Display.
  3. Click Night light.
  4. Switch on Turn on now to see the effect right away.
  5. Drag the Strength slider to choose how warm the colours get.

Faster still: click the network, sound and battery icons in the bottom right corner to open Quick settings. A Night light button is often sitting there, which lets you turn it on or off with a single click. If the button is missing, click the pencil to add it to your shortcuts.

3. Setting an automatic schedule

The real benefit is letting Windows handle the schedule on its own. You stop thinking about it: the screen warms up in the evening and goes back to normal in the morning. On the Night light page, switch on Schedule night light, then choose:

  • Sunset to sunrise: Windows follows the times automatically based on your location. This option needs location services turned on in the privacy settings.
  • Set hours: you pick the start and end times yourself, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for instance. This is the more dependable option if you would rather not share your location.

For a small business in the Mauricie running several workstations, this setting can also be pushed out centrally to every computer on the team. That is the kind of detail covered by IT fleet management from OKTO Solutions, so every employee gets the right comfort without having to configure anything.

4. Setting the strength properly

A common mistake is pushing the strength all the way up. The screen turns very orange and the colours go false, which gets in the way if you work on images, photos or documents where tone matters. A few simple guideposts:

  • Start somewhere around 40 to 60 percent strength, then adjust to your comfort.
  • Test it in the evening, in your real lighting conditions, not in broad daylight.
  • Pair Night light with lower brightness in the evening: together the two rest your eyes far better.
  • Turn Night light off temporarily for any task where exact colour matters (photo retouching, picking brand colours).

On some laptops, adaptive brightness also adjusts the screen to the ambient light. Used alongside Night light, it makes the display much easier on the eyes once evening sets in.

5. Going further to protect your team’s eyes

Night light helps, but it does not replace good habits. Screen work comes with clear recommendations in Quebec, in particular on breaks and screen position. The best known rule is 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look at something about 6 metres (20 feet) away for 20 seconds. It relaxes the muscles in the eye.

  • Place the screen at a right angle to windows to avoid reflections.
  • Keep the top of the screen at eye level, about an arm’s length away.
  • Take real micro breaks, especially during long end-of-month evenings.
  • Clean the screen regularly: a clean screen is less tiring on the eyes.

For a small business in Trois-Rivières or anywhere else in Quebec, a properly configured workstation is part of a healthy, productive work environment. It is a small setting, but added to dozens of other good practices, it changes the daily grind for your employees.

Frequently asked questions

Does Night light damage the screen?

No. Night light only changes how colours are displayed, in software. It has no physical effect on the panel and wears nothing out. You can switch it on and off as often as you like.

Why is Night light greyed out or not working?

It is almost always a graphics driver problem. Update the driver for your video card, restart, and the option becomes available again. Some wireless displays and older adapters do not support it either.

Does Night light replace software like f.lux?

For most people, yes. Night light covers the basic need without installing third-party software. External tools offer finer settings, but they are only worth it if you want very tight control over colour temperature.

A well-tuned workstation, anywhere in the Mauricie

Filtering blue light in the evening takes two minutes, but it is only one example among dozens of settings that make a workstation more comfortable and safer. If you want every computer in your business optimized, protected and maintained without you having to think about it, take a look at IT services from OKTO Solutions or contact our Trois-Rivières team to talk it through.

A quick fix settles one case. A team behind you settles the next ones: our IT support, our co-managed IT services and our IT services in Brossard.
