Demo sites: retail and ecommerce

Ecommerce website design for retailers, makers and producers in Quebec

An ecommerce site in Quebec needs real product photos with price and stock, GST and QST calculated at checkout, a choice of delivery or pickup, and the information the law requires for distance sales shown before payment. French comes first, with English available as a second version.

What makes a customer buy from an online store instead of somewhere else?

The product page does most of the work. A shopper weighing a perfume, a yellow birch table or a case of wine wants to see it from several angles, know the dimensions, materials and format, and check that it's in stock before clicking. They also want to know what shipping costs before they reach the cart, not after. A store that hides those fees loses the sale at the last step. For a sauna or furniture maker, where the product is big and expensive, the page also has to answer questions about installation and scheduled delivery. Otherwise the customer calls. Or leaves.

What information does Quebec law require from an online store?

Quebec's Consumer Protection Act sets rules for contracts made at a distance. Before the customer pays, the merchant has to provide full contact details, a detailed description of the goods, the total price with all fees, delivery terms and the cancellation or return policy. The customer must be able to accept or decline clearly, then receive a copy of the contract. On the site, that means a sales terms page that's easy to find and a full order summary right before payment. The Charter of the French Language requires the site, product pages and order messages to be in French, at least as prominent as any other language. Have your terms reviewed by your legal advisor.

Should you offer delivery, in-store pickup or both?

It depends on the product and the customers. A non-alcoholic drink or a perfume ships well by mail, with a rate calculated from the address. A solid wood sofa or a sauna needs scheduled delivery, sometimes installation, and the customer wants to pick a time slot. Pickup at the shop or the vineyard suits people who live nearby and saves them the fee. The site can offer all three in the same cart, with rules per product: this item is pickup only, that one ships anywhere in Quebec. Alcohol sales are regulated through permits issued by the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux, so a producer confirms its obligations before opening the store.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions: Retail and e-commerce

How long does it take to build an online store?
Mostly it depends on how many products you have and how ready the photos and descriptions are. A small store with a finished catalogue goes up quickly. A catalogue of several hundred items connected to inventory and accounting software needs more preparation. The target date is set at the scoping meeting.
Can the store connect to my inventory and accounting software?
Yes. Orders can update inventory and flow into your accounting software, so nothing gets entered twice. The exact connection depends on the software you already use.
Can I sell alcohol on my website in Quebec?
Some producers can, but alcohol sales are regulated through permits issued by the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux. Check your permit and delivery rules before opening the store. The site then adapts with age verification, delivery zones and on-site pickup.
Are the stores shown on this page real businesses?
No. They are demo sites with made-up brands: the perfumery, the furniture workshop, the sparkling drink, the vineyard and the sauna maker don't exist. They show what can be built for a business like yours.
How much does a site like these cost, and how long does it take to go live?
The price is set after a no-commitment scoping meeting, based on the number of pages, the languages, the copy to write and features like booking or an online store. A simple showcase site goes live quickly; an online store or a client portal takes longer. If you have a fixed date, we build the schedule around it.
Do I own the website?
Yes. The domain name is registered in your name, the copy, images and analytics are yours, and the code is handed over on request.
